Why Stocking is Needed
- The number of sturgeon in the project area is much lower now than historically.
- Some spawning sites in Saskatchewan and Manitoba have been altered so they are no longer suitable, or are less suitable, than they used to be.
- Numbers of young sturgeon coming into the population from natural spawning are lower than they were historically.
- One goal of the SRSMB Ten-Year Management Plan is to “Achieve a measurable increase in the spawning population in 20 years”. Stocking fry and fingerlings should help meet this goal.
